Published Feb 15, 2013Vancouver's Gordon Smith has already shown off his varied songwriting skills a few ways this year via the doom-and-gloom attack of his Rotting Hills and the moody country tunes of Percheron. Now the increasingly prolific guitarist is offering up even more music via his mind-expanding Tobeatic's just-delivered digital LP All to Hell.
According to a press release, the sextet blazed through a four-day recording session with producer Jesse Gander (White Lung, Japandroids) at Burnaby's Hive Creative Labs and emerged from the ashes with the seven-song set. The opening title track boogies out the gate with a heavy-hitting mishmash of Thin Lizzy riffs, freewheeling guitar solos and Iron Butterfly-approved organ runs.
Elsewhere, you've got Smith letting loose tortured screams on the gospel-gloom metal number "That Boy's Got the Devil in 'Em," while epic closer "Frozen Ocean" features a bit of harmonica honkin'.
