Timbaland To Release the First "Mobile Album"

BY Cam LindsayPublished Feb 8, 2008

Timbaland has revealed that he is currently working on a "mobile album” that will be available exclusively to subscribers of V Cast, Verizon Wireless’ mobile entertainment service.

Billboard.com reports that this ridiculous proposal will find "Verizon's mobile producer in residence” producing one track a month in 2008, as he tours the country on the Verizon Mobile Recording Studio Bus. Each song will feature a collaboration with different artists, the sessions of which will be available for V Cast subscribers to view on a special Timbaland channel.

The multi-platinum producer and recording artist says it’s an opportunity for him to reach a wider audience and make history. "Every place don't get a CD [but] everybody has a mobile phone… Just producing a mobile album has never been done. I'm the first to ever do it," he told Billboard.

The songs will all be available to V Cast subscribers and Verizon users as a full-length download, ringtone and ringback. The end of the year will see Verizon release a full album, compiling each of the songs, however, no plans have been made to release it outside of the network, though it appears Timbaland’s label Interscope may work its way into the equation somehow. "How I prepare for [the new album] is, I just do it, like any other album," he said. "The only difference is it's immediate."

Timbaland is is set to debut the first song (featuring Keri Hilson, who sang on his hit single "The Way I Are”) at a pre-Grammy party tonight. He’s nominated for five Grammys at this Sunday’s event, including Record of the Year for Justin Timberlake’s "What Goes Around…Comes Around” and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for "Give It To Me.”
