Tim Gilbertson Tim Gilbertson

It’s hard to describe Edmonton native Tim Gilbertson’s self-titled debut without mentioning the fact that he’s only 20. There is a certain amount of maturity on display that belies his age, yet it’s probably his youthful exuberance that keeps his album on track, at times. There’s joyfulness to his songs, from their nice, crunchy guitars to the unforced vocals, and despite a couple of weaker moments, this is an incredibly accomplished piece of work. Not to mention that he does everything on the album, apart from playing the drums, which he recruited his brother to do. His songwriting harkens back to simpler times (in the most positive way possible) and it’s refreshing to hear something so immediately appealing. Gilbertson definitely hasn’t been reinventing the wheel but he’s using it effectively and sometimes that’s more than enough. (Pop Echo)
