Tijuana Bibles

Custom Made

BY Neil HavertyPublished Sep 1, 2002

If this garage rock revival actually turns into a full-fledged trend, we're all in for a load of bands trying too hard. It's not that the Tijauna Bibles or bands of their ilk are bad, it just tends to seem a little forced. To give credit where credit is due, the Bibles have been doing the surf garage thing for a while now, so it's hard to write them off so quickly, but Custom Made doesn't provide much to hang on to. There's something to be said for the kitsch factor but it's not enough to keep even a short 20 minutes feeling fresh. Novelty is all fine and good, but if you don't give us something we like, the novelty will soon wear thin. Masks don't make up for a lack of creativity, no matter how tough you look in them.
