Thus Owls Announce 'Black Matter' EP, Share New Song

BY Alex HudsonPublished Sep 24, 2015

Having originally formed in Europe, the Swedish-Canadian outfit Thus Owls haven't looked back since migrating to Montreal a few years ago. Following last year's Turning Rocks LP, Erika and Simon Angell are back with a new short collection. Black Matter will be out on November 6 through Secret City Records.

The EP was recorded at home and at friends' practice spaces, with an additional session at Planet Studios with Pierre Girard. Contributors include drummer Liam O'Neill (Suuns), drummer Stefan Schneider (Bell Orchestre, the Luyas) and string arranger Daniel Bjarnason (Sigur Rós, Ben Frost).

The album cover (above) was created by Godspeed You! Black Emperor visual contributor Karl Lemieux. See the tracklist below, along with the band's tour schedule. They've got some Quebec dates come up in the next few days.

At the bottom of this page, hear the tensely sweeping art-rock tune "Turn Up the Volumes."

The band said in a statement about the track, "We always heard this 'swinging' cymbal in our minds when thinking of the arrangements for this tune and that's how we ended up thinking of Liam O'Neill for the drums. His timber and tone was what we always imagined. This song is about standing fast in your choice and doing what you have to do even though it might be hard, and even though you have to leave some things behind. This song is indigo."

Copies of Black Matter can be pre-ordered on iTunes or from Secret City's online store.
