Thurston Moore Scores Porn (Again!)

BY Scott A. GrayPublished Jan 18, 2008

Sure it's supposed to be an artsy adult video, but the title, Extra Action (And Extra Hardcore) leaves little doubt about the basic content of this second collaboration between Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and photographer/filmmaker Richard Kern. An extensive history exists between the two artists, as Moore provided an original soundtrack to an hour-long DVD accompanying Kern's 2007 photo book, Action. Additionally, the band lent music to soundtracks of Kern's early films, using a still from Submit to Me Now for the cover of their 1986 album EVOL, and Kern returned the favour by directing videos for SY's "Death Valley 69" and "Scooter and Jinx." Find out what Thurston will do to the cheesy wah-wah drenched conventions of porn music when the DVD comes out on March 18, featuring unreleased Kern films as bonus material.

For even more Moore, check out No Wave: Post-Punk. Underground. New York. 1976-1980, an oral and photographic history of the no wave scene co-written by Moore and Byron Coley. The book is set to be released on June 1 through Abrams Image Books.
