It's only been a few days since Los Angeles bass whiz Thundercat announced The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam, and now it's already here. The EP is out today (June 22) on Brainfeeder, and it's available to stream in full.
Thundercat — a.k.a. Stephen Bruner — self-produced the album along with his collaborator Flying Lotus. It also features jazz keyboardist Herbie Hancock along with other guests, and the results blend modern-sounding electronic soul with genre-crossing inclinations. The synthesized slow-burn of "Song of the Dead" features jazz drumming, while the grooving rhythmic throb of "Them Changes" is injected with squelchy funk, and "Lone Wolf and Cub" is takes baroque folk balladry into a hip-hop-inspired direction.
