Thoughts on 2008: Flotilla

Published Jan 2, 2009

To tide us over while we indulge in the holiday spirit gorging on stuffing and egg nog, we asked a bunch of musicians to tell us their thoughts on 2008. Some of them replied with lists of their favourite music, some told us their fondest memories and some came up with much more creative ways to commemorate this past year.

Flotilla have chosen their favourite musical encounters of 2008:

1. Metal Kites at the Round Barn Party
Lisa Poushinsky puts this on every summer in the vicinity of Ottawa and this year we found ourselves in the company of what seemed like the elite of indie music. In particular, John Tielli's Metal Kites, ordinarily a more raucous affair, delivered an enchanting, low-key set accompanied by sparklers, clouds of mosquitos and the proffered dandelion wine. A net plus, by a mile.

2. Alex Lukashevsky (Deep Dark United)
Okay, we've heard Alex play earlier than this year but regarding 2008: When we heard that Owen Pallett would create a tribute album to Lukashevsky, we rejoiced. At the same time, seeing him deliver his songs live, supported by a beat-up nylon-string only, is one of our great pleasures in life.

3. Culture Reject at the Blacksheep Inn
Geof was sure he recognized this guy (Michael O'Connell), as it turns out, from having seen Black Cabbage play in his hometown of Guelph. We were continuously captivated by the one-man act he was on this night. Great songs, and the man sure makes good use of a loop pedal, pulling off a lot of intricate guitar-layers and vocal harmonies, and leaving no backing band to be desired.

Looking forward to more musical encounters in 2009, as we release and tour our new album!
