Thoughts on 2008: Exclaim! Contributor Brock Thiessen

To tide us over while we indulge in the holiday spirit gorging on stuffing and egg nog, we asked a bunch of our contributors to tell us their thoughts on 2008, as well as their favourite records that helped make it a memorable year. Brock Thiessen followed the rules and gave us his ten favourite Pop Rocks and Frequencies albums:

Like every year, compiling my 2008 best-of list came with a big set of rules, some personal, some imposed by the powers that be at Exclaim! But to be honest, I like the rules; they give a bit more focus and make the whole narrowing-down a tad less painful.

Still, they do force you to ignore a lot of great stuff, but rules are rules. This means including no compilations (such as Portastatic's Some Small History and Glass Candy's Deep Gems), no mixes (the Twelves Episode II), no EPs (Air France's No Way Down), no reissues (Gas's Nah Und Fern, Pluxus's Solid State), no live albums (Justice's A Cross the Universe) and certainly no albums that were released in 2007 but I fell in love with in 2008 (Burial's Untrue, Shocking Pinks' Shocking Pinks).

So, with rules followed and strictly enforced, here's what I've come up with for my top picks of 2008, which are more the records I just really enjoyed this year rather than what I'd call the "best":
