Published May 08, 2013We already new that Jack White's Third Man Records would be releasing the star-studded soundtrack of The Great Gatsby on vinyl. This release just got even cooler, since Third Man has confirmed the details of a deluxe edition containing — wait for it — platinum and gold LPs.
According to the description on the label's website, these records are being made using real platinum and gold. We're not making this up.
The announcement reads, "Both LPs in the set are blindingly reflective metallized discs. Disc one is platinum and disc two is gold. These are the first-ever commercially available records made using these precious metals via this process."
We're not sure exactly how much real platinum and gold are used in the records, but regardless, this is pretty awesome.
Making this package even crazier is the sleeve, since the records will come in a laser-cut wooden jacket with aluminum spines. However, this release isn't going to be cheap: it will cost $250, with pre-sales beginning this Friday (May 10) at 9 a.m. through Third Man's website. (We're guessing that's 9 a.m. CST, since Third Man is located in Nashville, TN.) Additionally, 100 copies will be sold that morning at Third Man's retail store.

As for the standard vinyl edition, it will be pressed on 180-gram wax and packaged in a gold foil-stamped gatefold sleeve. Pre-sales for this edition will begin on May 10, with the official release following on June 11.
The soundtrack of The Great Gatsby features the likes of Jay-Z, Beyoncé and André 3000, the XX, Florence and the Machine, Bryan Ferry, and Lana Del Rey. Read more about it here.
