The Sword Guitarist Says Metallica's Kirk Hammett Had "The Best Weed I Ever Smoked"

Romulan and God's Gift were the strains of choice on tour

The Sword are no strangers to High Country; the deluxe edition for that album came with a whole smoke shop's worth of goodies to ascend to new heights with. But when it comes to the best cannabis guitarist Kyle Shutt has ever had, top honours go to the stash of Metallica's Kirk Hammett.

Shutt didn't hesitate to speak reverently of his bud's buds during a recent conversation with Metal Injection, when he was posed the simple question of who had the best stash to smoke from.

"Kirk Hammett," Shutt answered, explaining, "He had this shit called 'Romulan' one time, which was, probably, the best weed I ever smoked." Per cannabis website Leafly, Romulan is a powerful indica strain that promises "potent therapeutic qualities."

Shutt went on to share a story of a different strain while on tour with Metallica, recalling their time supporting the thrash titans on their "World Magnetic Tour" between 2008 and 2010. That time, it was a strain dubbed "God's Gift," and by the guitarist's admission, it was "the stinkiest weed ever."

"When we were on tour with Metallica, they didn't really care what we did, but they would usually put our dressing room far away from theirs, so we could do whatever we wanted," Shutt explained. "But if it ever was a venue where our dressing rooms were wall-to-wall attached to each other, they would just ask that we didn't smoke in our dressing room, so that no smoke would get in their room and bother them. And, we were totally respectful of that. No bones about it.

"So we had this bag of 'God's Gift,' we weren't even smoking it. We were just hanging out backstage, breaking it up, to take all the stems out. They came and knocked on our door like, 'Hey guys, you know you can't smoke in here, what are you doing?' And we're like, 'we're not even smoking it, we're just breaking it up,' and they looked at the weed and they were like...'Wow…anyway, would you mind taking that outside?'"

Shutt also gave a shout-out to Clutch ("Those guys are made out of weed"), sharing how that band put him in touch with Willie Nelson's weed dealer in Nashville. He shared, "We bought an ounce of that Willie weed, not his brand, but this was the stuff that Willie would buy when he would roll through Nashville. Wow, that was incredible."

You can hear Shutt's entire interview here. The Sword's most recent album is 2018's Used Future, and they recently paid tribute to Rush.
