The National Detail Grateful Dead Tribute Album Featuring Wilco, the Flaming Lips, Mumford & Sons

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Mar 17, 2016

Way back in 2011, members of the National started working on a tribute compilation honouring the music of the Grateful Dead, and now full details for the Day of the Dead box set have been revealed. The whopping 59-track, five-hour-plus box set is due out on May 20 via 4AD.

Originally rumoured to feature contributions from Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver and Steve Reich, additional collaborators like Stephen Malkmus, the War on Drugs, the Walkmen, Kurt Vile and J Mascis, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Fucked Up were teased last year. Well, the full official tracklisting has now been unveiled, and it boasts all of the aforementioned artists and then some.

Jim James, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Perfume Genius, Sharon Van Etten, Courtney Barnett, Mumford & Sons, Lucius, Lee Ranaldo, ANOHNI, Angel Olsen, Wilco, Charles Bradley, Tallest Man on Earth, Cass McCombs, Tim Hecker, Lucinda Williams, Local Natives, Bela Fleck, the Walkmen, Richard Reed Parry, Real Estate, the Flaming Lips and Bill Callahan are amongst the esteemed list of performers that covered Grateful Dead classics for the project.

The collection was produced by the National's Aaron Dessner, with Bryce Dessner and Josh Kaufman earning co-producer credits. All three also perform on a selection of the tracks as the house band alongside the National's Scott and Bryan Devendorf, Conrad Doucette, Sam Cohen and the Walkmen's Walter Martin.

You can find the extensive tracklisting in its entirety below. The songs will arrive as a five-CD set, as well as digitally and in a limited-edition vinyl box set, with proceeds benefitting the HIV/AIDS non-profit organization Red Hot. Full compilation details be found here.
