The National

'Sleep Well Beast' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Sep 8, 2017

The National's long-awaited new LP, Sleep Well Beast, is finally here.

It marks the follow-up to 2013's Trouble Will Find Me, and hears the band pushing their sound past their usual brand of symphonic indie rock — playing with sounds that stretch further into the realm of electronic experimentation, as well as incorporating more straightforward elements of rock'n'roll, like guitar riffs and solos.

The band have teased the new record with previously shared tracks like "The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness," "Guilty Party," "Carin at the Liquor Store" and "Day I Die."

Frontman Matt Berninger recently spoke to Exclaim! about how the current political climate affected this record. "Even for people that voted for Trump, everything is so personal and everybody's suffering and desperate and at the ends of their ropes," he said. "That shit's all over this record."
