The Mountain Goats returned to their boombox roots with Songs for Pierre Chuvin earlier this year, and now John Darnielle and his band have announced a proper studio album.

The new album is called Getting into Knives and was recorded with Matt Ross-Spang at Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis. It was produced in the same room where the Cramps recorded their 1980 debut.

The 13-song release will arrive on October 23 via Merge Records, which will release the record on CD, cassette and 2-LP vinyl.

Ahead of its arrival, the song "As Many Candles as Possible" can be streamed below. The track features Al Green organist Charles Hodges.
