The Melvins

"Take Me Out to the Ball Game"

The Melvins' multiple lineup shifts over the last 30 years would suggest otherwise, but the Pacific Northwest sludgesters may be traditionalists at heart. In conjunction with the Major League Baseball season having celebrated Opening Day over the weekend, the band have offered up a stream of their Basses Loaded closer, "Take Me Out to the Ball Game."

If you thought this would be a metal-twisted, freaky take on the 7th inning anthem, guess again. The Melvins 1983 lineup of Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover and Mike Dillard have offered up a fairly traditional, organ-manned cover that has them heartily rooting for the home team. Maybe that it's an on-the-nose cover is the weirdest thing of all.

You can listen to the song here on Pitchfork.

As previously reported, Basses Loaded features a number of bass players, including Nirvana's Krist Novoselic, J.D. Pinkus (Butthole Surfers), Jared Warren (Big Business), and Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle/Fantomas). The album hits stores June 3 through Ipecac.

The Melvins are also heading out on tour with Napalm Death and the Boredoms this year. You'll find the tour schedule over here.
