Bassist Juan Alderete — a longtime member of the Mars Volta who has more recently played in Marilyn Manson's live band — is in a coma following a bicycle accident.

His wife Anne revealed the news on Instagram this weekend. She posted a photo of Alderete and explained that he had sustained a traumatic brain injury on January 13 following a bike accident (which didn't involve any cars or other people). The 56-year-old was wearing a helmet and protective clothing at the time.

She wrote, "The only prognosis is to wait and see" and requested that fans "please keep Juan in your thoughts."

Alderete was in the Mars Volta from 2003 until their split in 2012. He played on their sophomore album Frances the Mute and all subsequent LPs. He has also played extensively with his Mars Volta bandmate Omar Rodríguez-López's solo projects.

Alderete is a touring member of Marilyn Manson, and he was a core player in Big Sir and Racer X.

Alderete's wife has promised periodic updates on Instagram. Read her post below.
