Growing up isn't easy. For many of us, it feels like our quirks, flaws and foibles are magnified to obscene proportions, with no one in our daily lives to turn to for support. This feeling is brought to life on the big screen in Love, Simon, a new film about a gay teenager struggling to come out of the closet.
Many (if not all) of us at Exclaim! struggled to feel comfortable in our own skins during those precarious teenage years for our own various reasons, but there was one common thing that helped us get through them: music. From legends like Prince, David Bowie and Madonna to newer faces like Shamir, Tune-Yards and Partner, our favourite artists blazed their own trails in pursuit of authentic expression, and their songs were the perfect soundtrack to those tumultuous times.
In honour of Love, Simon, which arrives in theatres on March 16, we've compiled some of our favourite songs from those iconic artists into this handy playlist.
