The album John Lennon signed for Mark David Chapman, hours before Chapman murdered the Beatles legend in 1980, is up for auction.
A vinyl copy of Lennon & Yoko Ono's Double Fantasy, released three weeks before Lennon's murder, will hit the block through Goldin Auctions. The LP, which currently sports a single bid of $400,000 USD, could command over $2 million CAD, TMZ reports.
The auction brief explains how Chapman got Lennon to sign the record out front of New York apartment complex the Dakota, catching the Beatle as he went to the studio. Upon returning home that evening, Lennon was shot by Chapman, who had stashed the copy of Double Fantasy in one of the planters at the building's entrance.
Lennon signed the album in blue pen, writing "1980" below his signature, while police markings in pen and marker also appear on the jacket. The LP comes with a letter of authenticity from Beckett Authentication for John Lennon's signature, and is housed in a plexiglass display.

December 8 will mark the 40th anniversary of Lennon's assassination. Upon being denied parole for an eleventh time in August, Chapman apologized to Ono in September, explaining in his parole hearing, "I'm sorry for my crime. I have no excuse. This was for self-glory."
