Luke Pretty has announced his first full-length album as Tennyson. The Canadian artist and producer will deliver Rot on February 18 via Counter Records.
The 12-song Rot is said to be a further refining of Tennyson's sound, with Luke Pretty also lending his voice to nearly every song. Singer-songwriter Rae Morris lends a hand on "Slow Dance," while drummer and sister Tess Pretty has shared she will continue keeping time for live performances.
Rot was written during a period of distress, after Pretty developed a hearing condition brought on by mould exposure. "I was working on these tiny little speakers and making what I thought was garbage," he shares of the material, but that changed upon getting set up in a newly renovated room: "It sounded like what I went through."
A first glimpse at Rot arrives with the grooving "Iron," which you can hear alongside a lyric video below. Pretty shares in a statement that the song was written "about the worst nightmare I've ever had," in which he found himself unable to escape the multiple layers of his mind's activity.
"In the dream I kept waking up over and over again — while not actually waking up," he explains. "Each time I woke up I would get out of bed and do what I could to confirm that I was in reality… only to wake up again. I must have 'woken up' at least ten times. Each loop became increasingly more horrifying because I was so sure I had finally escaped.
"When I finally did wake up it was unmistakable. I knew in that moment I wasn't dreaming, and I wept with relief. Even so, for the first few hours of the morning a constant stream of chills ran down my spine: What if I were to wake up now?"
Tennyson will tour Rot in 2022, making Canadian stops in Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa. You can find the complete tour itinerary below.
