Scene Explosion

BY Scott A. GrayPublished May 24, 2008

The vibrant Toronto art scene now has its own variety show. Self-dubbed "video-vaudeville,” King Kaboom plays like schizophrenic YouTube viewing. Each 22-minute episode contains a mishmash of comedy, music, spoken word, dance and sideshow acts strung together with bizarre segues. Creators the Production League have put together an attractively shot, though over-branded program. Musical performances include bands like Spiral Beach and Deep Dark United alongside jazz and classical soloists. These musical segments are the show’s greatest strength; the irreverent comedy needs to find balanced footing to move from WFT? to funny and multiple inclusions of Spencer Butt’s inane ramblings is a waste, but show’s formula is promising. Only broadcasting locally now, King Kaboom, all the shows are available at www.kingkaboom.com.
