Published Feb 01, 2011Although it's billed as an annual event, we haven't had a Verge Music Awards winner since September 2009, when Dan Mangan and Alexisonfire took home $25,000 each for Artist of the Year and Album of the Year, respectively. Now, XM Canada's music prize is back, and the shortlist nominees for the third instalment of the awards have been announced.
The finalists were chosen via an online poll and fan voting reportedly tripled this year. The contenders for Artist of the Year are, in alphabetic order: Arcade Fire, Michou, Stars, Tegan and Sara, and Zeus.
The nominees for Album of the Year are: Michou with Cardona, Stars with The Five Ghosts, Tegan and Sara with Sainthood, Zeus with Say Us and the Zolas with Tic Toc Tic.
In addition to these two $25,000 categories, Verge and FACTOR will be handing out $5,000 in the category of Emerging Artist of the Year. The finalists for that category are: Elias, Hannah Georgas, Jay Malinowski, PS I Love You and the Rural Alberta Advantage.
The winners will be announced live on Verge XM 87 from the Mod Club in Toronto on March 1 at 6 p.m. EST. If you want to attend the event in person, tickets cost $20 in advance and $25 at the door. It should be well worth the cover, since the night will include performances from Gord Downie and the Country of Miracles, Tokyo Police Club and the Acorn.
Tickets will be limited and can be bought from Rotate This in Toronto.
