Tanya Tagaq Covers Nirvana, Collaborates with Shad on 'Retribution' LP

BY Josiah HughesPublished Aug 17, 2016

Beloved throat singer Tanya Tagaq has finally announced the follow-up to her Polaris-winning 2014 effort Animism

The album is called Retribution, and a press release suggests that it explores some seriously grave themes. "This album is a cohesive, whole statement," the writeup reads. "Why sugarcoat it? This album is about rape. Rape of women, rape of the land, rape of children, despoiling of traditional lands without consent."

To get that message across, Tagaq has paired her singular approach to musicianship with some notable collaborators. These include Shad, Jesse Zubot, Jean Martin, Radik Tyülyüsh, Ruben Komangapik and Tagaq's own daughter Inuuja.

Along with her own compositions, Tagaq closes out the album with a haunting cover of Nirvana's "Rape Me."

Retribution will arrive on October 21 via Six Shooter Records. You can find a trailer for the album at the bottom of the page, while Tagaq's upcoming tour dates are listed below.
