Kill The Record Labels

BY Melissa BesseyPublished May 22, 2009

Kill The Record Labels may sound like a riveting documentary exposing the nasty side of the music industry or another movie glorifying the rap game starring 50 Cent, but while Mr. Jackson is featured on the cover, and makes a brief appearance, don't be fooled by this DVD's appearance. The flick claims that "the record companies, in conjunction with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), have declared war" but I don't think this lone DVD and countless mixtape releases will destroy the major record labels. I am all for mixtapes but the real agenda of this film is to promote, educate and totally glorify mixtapes. If you've always wondered what mixtapes really are or have an interest in hearing very biased opinions by the DJs, MCs and producers who make tons of coin off them, watch Kill The Record Labels. Otherwise, pass on this one.
