If you've been holding your breath for a new System of a Down album, chances are you're long dead by now. But just to stamp out some remaining shreds of hope, the band's Daron Malakian is doubling down on the straight-up fact that the group are having some serious creative differences.
In a new interview with Talk Is Jericho, Malakian once again shot down the idea of a new System of a Down album with vocalist Serj Tankian coming out anytime soon.
"System had a certain way of putting together the albums and the music, and I guess that was me writing and all that, and producing the records, along with Rick [Rubin]," said Malakian. "And Serj wants to do things a different way. And it's not just me — it's kind of three of us that don't necessarily see eye to eye with where he would wanna take the band. So that's kind of where we're at. A lot of people think it's just between me and him, and that's not really the case."
Malakian's latest comments come after he revealed last month that a new LP isn't "happening anytime soon," citing "creative differences" between the bandmates.
"In our case, that's the truth," Malakian explained. "It really is a creative-difference type of thing where a few of us wanna take the band and where someone wants to take the band in another way."
This also came in the wake of Tankian himself penning a lengthy post in 2018 saying that he was the real cause of the new album hold-up.
If it ever came, the arrival of a new album would mark System of a Down's first release as a group since Hypnotize and Mesmerize both arrived in 2005.
