Published Feb 20, 2013Unwound may be gearing up for their back catalogue to get the deluxe reissue treatment this year via the Numero Group, but band members Justin Trosper and Brandt Sandeno are also whipping up tunes in a new band called Survival Knife. The outfit make their recorded debut March 5 via their "Traces of Me" / "Name That Tune" 7-inch on Sub Pop, but you can sample the record's B-side a couple of weeks before the due date.
The quartet, which also includes bassist Meg Cunningham and drummer Kris Cunningham, favours a hard rock-influenced post-punk punch that brings to mind Hot Snakes, with Trosper's desperate cries even coming across like ol' Rick Froberg. The cut powers by on a high-octane backbeat, with Trosper and Sandeno's accompanying twin guitar melodies often running freaky and discordant.
