Fabric 53

BY Yuri WuenschPublished Aug 22, 2010

As Surgeon, Anthony Child may be the last of a dying breed. Widely recognized as one of the pre-eminent names in hard techno to emerge from the '90s, many of his banging peers have since tempered their sound with a more minimalist approach. Fans will be glad to know that time hasn't dulled Surgeon's scalpel. With Fabric 53, the Birmingham native has delivered arguably the toughest Fabric instalment to date. Across 30 tracks, Child keeps the mix impressively nuanced, infusing it with break beats that act almost as gear changes. On the up shift: tunes by the likes of Mark Broom and James Ruskin, Marco Bernardi and Robert Hood. Gearing down: Ancient Methods, Cari Lekebusch and Surgeon's "Compliance Momentum." Tapping the breaks: Instra:mental, Starkey and the old school electro finale of DJ Overdose's "What." At the risk of sounding cliché, Surgeon's classic techno cure is just what the doctor ordered.
