Supergrass's Gaz Coombes Emerges with Solo Album

BY Alex HudsonPublished Feb 15, 2012

Supergrass called it quits back in 2010, meaning that frontman Gaz Coombes is free to do whatever he wants -- namely, release a solo album. Entitled Gaz Coombes Presents... Here Come the Bombs, it will arrive on May 21 in the UK via Hot Fruit Recordings/EMI.

UPDATE: The record will arrive in Canada on May 22 via Dine Alone Records.

Coombes recorded the bulk of the record in his home studio, and shares a production credit along with onetime Supergrass studio collaborator Sam Williams.

"In a band, when you get a group of people who are walking the same path, it can be the most beautiful thing," said Coombes in a statement. "But with this I felt it was really focused on just what I wanted to get across, and on my inspirations -- they were all my things that I'm into, whether it's film, film soundtrack, or past artists that we didn't really look at much in Supergrass. That was all really exciting. This is a completely blank page in a blank book, ready to be written on."

For a taste of the album, head over to Facebook, where you can download the track "Sub-Divider" in exchange for an email address. A lyric video for the song is streaming at the bottom of this page. Also expect the single "Hot Fruit" to arrive ahead of the album.

Unfortunately, no North American release date has been announced yet for the record.
