Sunn 0))'s Stephen O'Malley and Editions Mego's Peter Rehberg Reteam as KTL for New Album

Over four albums, Sunn 0))'s Stephen O'Malley and Editions Mego founder Peter Rehberg have bridged the sonic gap between metal and drone with their KTL project. For their upcoming fifth album V, however, the duo are promising even more leaps in sonic exploration.

As a press release explains, the duo worked hard to release something unlike any of their previous collaborations. "Rooting themselves in such legendary electronic music studios such as EMS in Stockholm and GRM in Paris, O'Malley and Rehberg have delivered a rich set of sound experiments far removed from harsh metal/noise blizzards of their early albums."

Part of that shift included recruiting Icelandic neoclassical composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, who added orchestration to the 15-minute penultimate track "Phill 2."

V will be released on double-vinyl and CD by Rehberg's own Editions Mego imprint on May 8. The album can be pre-ordered here, which is probably a good idea -- the first 300 copies of the record come with a free twelve-inch of bonus outtakes from the GRM sessions.

V:

1. Phill 1
2. Study A
3. Tony
4. Phill 2
5. Last Spring: A Prequel
