Summer Walker is clearly a product of recent R&B sensibilities and frailties, for better or worse. In this case, it's in the positive; Over It is perhaps one of the more interesting R&B-oriented outings this year. Collaborations like "Playing Games" (with Bryson Tiller), "Like It" (with 6lack), "I'll Kill You" (with Jhene Aiko) and a surprisingly solid Usher team-up in "Come Thru" come correct. As does the Drake collaboration in "Girls Need Love."
It's just in the fearlessness and the "don't give a fuck" vibe of the proceedings, coupled with solid vocals and a finger on the pulse of relationship realities on the verge of a new decade. At 18 tracks, things do feel a bit overstuffed, but numbers like "Fun Girl," "Body" and the title track are worth sticking around for. With Over It, the Atlanta singer-songwriter is on point with a debut that's ultimately a contemplation on sexual politics and emotional availability.
