Sum 41 have been fairly quiet since their tour with Billy Talent last spring, and now frontman Deryck Whibley has issued a statement revealing that he has been hospitalized due to excessive drinking.
In a blog post shared on Friday evening (May 16) on his website [via CityNews], the singer-guitarist revealed that he has been in the hospital for the past month. This is apparently the result of "drinking hard every day," which had made him sick for several weeks leading up to his hospitalization.
The tipping point came when he was drinking at home and preparing to watch a movie before collapsing unconscious. His fiancée had him taken to hospital, where they reportedly found that his "liver and kidneys collapsed."
As unpleasant as all this sounds, Whibley seems to be taking a positive outlook, saying, "It scared me straight. I finally realized I can't drink anymore. If I have one drink the doc's say I will die. I'm not preaching or anything but just always drink responsibly." What's more, he said that he has his "passion and inspiration back for writing music," and he's looking forward to making a new album and touring.
He posted some fairly graphic photos of himself in the hospital, so exercise caution before looking at the full post here.
Sum 41's most recent album was 2011's Screaming Bloody Murder.
