There is no denying the fact that Strung Out are an incredible band. They’ve been consistent musically and dedicated to their fans since day one; however, Exile in Oblivion has the feel of a band going through motions, and trying in vain to kick-start an aging sound. The technical ability is still there, but the songs lack the genuine emotional punch of the band’s past work. Although the record certainly has its moments, such as the frantic energy of "Never Speak Again” and the ’80s vocal effects present on "Lucifermotorcade,” much of the record is marred by a lack of creativity. Though talent and chops have never been, and will never be an issue for Strung Out, a new approach to songwriting could keep the band from a headlong dive into punk rock mediocrity.
