Toronto's Littlefolk — the solo project of Brandon Pearse — releases his new full-length record today, and here at Exclaim!, you can listen to it in its entirety. The album, titled Songs of Harry Throat, arrives courtesy of Blob Records.
According to a press release, the album is Pearse's "methodically crafted soundtrack for personal reflection," a collection recorded as an outlet for a metal player's acoustic catalogue.
"My main goal with Songs of Harry Throat was to step away from the 'strummer' idea while creating more varied compositions," he says. "I wanted to give a little more breadth to the project and incorporate ideas from a more diverse background of music."
Additionally, Pearse drew inspiration from the late Purple Mountains/Silver Jews mastermind, David Berman.
"Hearing the urgency and matter of fact ways he sang or spoke his words left me completely locked in. He approached the normalcy, the mundane, the grand, the dark, and the beautiful in the same way," Pearse explained. "Just seeing it and living it to a degree was very inspiring to me. David Berman was a student of the world and a student of himself, really. I love his songs and poems and continue to learn from them."
Songs of Harry Throat was produced by Mr. Joy's Asher Gould-Murtagh and marks Littlefolk's follow-up to 2016's Cats in the Bath.
Previously, Pearse had shared "Wire on My Teeth," the album's lead single.
