Following promising teaser track like "Alpha Adept," poetic Weakerthans hero John K. Samson has rolled out his new solo album Winter Wheat.
As previously reported, the album is "inspired by the search for community, his hometown of Winnipeg, and individual and collective struggles with addictions to drugs, screens, and fossil fuels." Several songs were also inspired by Neil Young's beloved 1974 album On the Beach and "that record's honest and unvarnished spirit is evident throughout."
The album was produced in various locales around Winnipeg by Samson himself, collaborator Christine Fellows and fellow Weakerthan Jason Tait. Guests on the record also include Greg Smith (the Weakerthans), Ashley Au, Leanne Zacharias and Shotgun Jimmie.
But it's high time you actually stop reading about the album and just give it a listen for yourself — something you can do right now courtesy of CBC Music, which has also posted a track-by-track guide to the album.
Winter Wheat arrives officially on October 21 through Anti-. You can also see a few Samson solo dates below.
UPDATE (10/17, 12:30 p.m. EDT): Samson has added a show in Vancouver on February 2.
Tour dates:
11/04 Winnipeg, MB - West End Cultural Centre
11/05 Winnipeg, MB - West End Cultural Centre
11/08 Toronto, ON - The Mod Club
02/02 Vancouver, BC - The Imperial
