Published Apr 06, 2011Stones Throw Records has been putting out music for 15 years, and in that time, the vinyl-specialist label has released celebrated albums by J Dilla, MF Doom, Madlib and many more. In the coming months, the label will be celebrating its 15th anniversary with a series of concerts that will be released as live albums.
The first anniversary show will take place on April 14, and it features Mayer Hawthorne & the County. Opening for the soul singer and his band will be the jazz group Rick. Stones Throw boss Peanut Butter Wolf will DJ between sets.
The show will take place at L.A.'s Capsule Labs, a vinyl pressing and mastering plant. According to an announcement on the label's website, "The sets will be recorded straight to vinyl LP in real time." This means that the band will play with "recording engineers mixing and mastering the record as it's happening."
The result will be titled Direct-to-Disc #1. Five hundred copies will be pressed, all on vinyl. There will be no CDs or digital versions.
The shows will be invite-only, with a capacity of 100. Free tickets will be given away on Twitter, Facebook, and Stones Throw's homepage.
Look for Direct-to-Disc #1 to be released in the coming months, and don't be surprised if more anniversary shows are announced soon.
