The Stills

Remberese

BY Andrew SteenbergPublished Aug 1, 2003

The Stills EP of three songs (one of which was recorded in a bedroom) and one remix is lazy, an insult to consumers and more than enough to get anyone who hears it excited about these moody ex-pats. Working out of New York by way of Montreal, the Stills distil the dark dynamics of the Cure and early Verve just enough to cover their, gulp, Northern Pikes-ish vocal approach. It all works very (very) well, though, most notably on the heart-wrenching "Killer Bees” which, I’ve recently decided, will be played at both my wedding and my funeral and at 30-minute intervals throughout the rest of my life. Quite fond of that one.
