Though it's only been a year since Vancouver stoner rock ensemble Black Mountain released their Wilderness Heart LP, the band have already planned their follow-up. Speaking to Exclaim!, band leader Steve McBean confirmed that the troupe's next release will be the soundtrack to a surf film called Year Zero. The film, which centres on skate and surf company Globe's team of wave riders, is described in a press release as a "post-apocalyptic surf film."
McBean explained that the accompanying soundtrack, which will be pressed as a vinyl-only release by Jagjaguwar this January, is made up of unreleased material from throughout the band's career, and even some from before.
"We recorded one really old unreleased song, 'Mary Lou' that actually predates back to Jerk With a Bomb" [McBean, drummer Joshua Wells and vocalist Amber Webber's previous band]," McBean says. "Then Josh, Amber, and I sent files back and forth through the cyber galaxy then mixed it at the Hive with Colin Stewart a month ago. It's five new songs and five previously released songs."
Though a neither a tracklisting nor a firm street date have been announced for Year Zero, you can watch a trailer for the flick below.
Meanwhile, McBean's other gig, the more folksy Pink Mountaintops, also have some new tunes on the horizon. Though the group's membership has fluctuated over the years, their next record, which follows 2009's Outside Love, will be recorded by the pared-down lineup of McBean on guitars and vocals and former Delta 72 member/current Cat Power collaborator Gregg Foreman on keyboards. You can see the duo performing new tune "You Can Dream" at last month's Fuck Yeah Fest in L.A. over here.
McBean reports that they'll be recording throughout October and November with hopes to have an album out by next summer. In the meantime Pink Mountaintops will be taking off for a short tour down the U.S. West Coast before heading over to Europe. You can check the dates below.
