Steve Lacy

Hooky

BY David LewisPublished Dec 1, 2000

Recorded almost 25 years ago in Montreal, this virtuoso solo set documents the soprano sax master's lyrical art in full flower. Even if you possess the extremely rare LP on Quark, over 50 minutes of the music here is being issued for the first time. From the lyrical variations of "The Crust" and microtonal swing of the title track, to the ascending triplets of "Revolutionary Suicide" and six sections of the "Tao" suite, possibly the most organic and profound of all Lacy's original works, Hooky is a masterpiece.
