Published Dec 01, 2010Legendary UK anarcho-punks Crass only existed for seven years, but they left behind a legacy of overt political messages, crust punk back patches and some excellent records. While the original members of the band haven't played as Crass since 1974, former frontman Steve "Ignorant" Williams has performed the group's work on occasion since 2002. In 2011, he will bring a new version of Crass on a North American tour.
Before you get your bullet belt in a knot, know that the lack of new members means the band are officially billed as "Steve Ignorant's the Last Supper: Crass Songs 1977 - 1984." The group will perform select shows across North America this March, including Canadian appearances in Montreal and Toronto. All dates are available below.
The tour coincides with Ignorant's slate of Crass reissues, which he has dubbed the Crassical Collection. The collection includes deluxe CD reissues of all the Crass albums with expanded tracklistings and fancy booklets. For now, the releases are UK-only, but a North American distribution deal is being arranged. More information on the series can be found here.
The Crassical Collection has drawn the ire of Ignorant's former Crass bandmates. In an interview with Exberliner [via Brooklyn Vegan], Ignorant explains, "There are three members who are totally against these re-releases, and I don't think they've got any idea whatsoever about how important those records are to people... And then they threaten us, saying, 'If you do release it, I'm going to take you to court.' Well, how ridiculous is that? Big, bad anarchists Crass can't sort a problem out without running to court, or the system that they were fighting against. How weird is that?"
