Steve Albini Responds to Elvis Costello: "He Won't Shut Up About Me"

"I'm sure I have some opinions about Elvis Costello. I don't think they should matter to him either."

A few weeks ago, Elvis Costello slammed Steve Albini when discussing PJ Harvey's Albini-produced 1993 album, Rid of Me, saying, "For me, the record sounds like shit," and, "That guy doesn't know anything about production." In a new interview, Albini has responded to Costello's comments.

During his latest appearance on the podcast Kreative Kontrol with Vish Khanna (hosted by, full disclosure, longtime Exclaim! contributor Vish Khanna), Khanna mentioned to Albini that "your name came up recently," prompting Albini to say, "Ah, fuckin' Elvis Costello, he won't shut up about me!"

Said Albini, "If he doesn't like my stuff, that's fine," and, "Opinions about me are for other people. They're none of my business, you're welcome to them. I'm sure I have some opinions about Elvis Costello. I don't think they should matter to him either."

He continued, "Think about something atrocious. The stadium will be filled when the New York Yankees play in public again. There are people that are really into stuff and people that really hate it. None of it bothers me. I don't wear it like a badge of honour that Elvis Costello isn't into recording work, but also, I just don't care."
