Stereo Total

Do the Bambi

BY Andrew SteenbergPublished May 1, 2005

Stereo Total, like shellfish, are either loved or hated. There are few, if any, people who are impartial to the French-based polyglots’ wry Euro-pop, and Do the Bambi is sure to keep the division between fan and opponent well-defined. We get songs in which Francoise Cactus expiates, with hefty defiance, that she is naked: "my neighbour can see my tits/well, he will survive it/he’s got a satellite dish.” Elsewhere she spends two and a half minutes listing film stars. There’s also a song devoted entirely to how hungry she is. This is pop art doubling as music and as with all pop art, its virtues, if indeed there are any, are nebulous or deeply subjective. Like it, hate it or ignore it.
