Published May 07, 2015Montreal-based musician, producer and visual artist Devon Hansen is prepping a new album under the moniker Stefan Jós, and while Primitives doesn't arrive until later this month, Exclaim! has got your first listen to its lead single "Smack (Again)."
The project shows off the beat-heavy, club-ready side to Hansen's sound, eschewing the intellectual, minimalist techno he makes as D.Hansen and a "big venue expansion" of the emotional music he makes as Lotide. As Stefan Jós, the multi-moniker-adopting musician retains his cinematic approach to making songs, delivering a collection of "loose and moody rhythms, wood and metal, weird noises in wet caves and other goodies for ground-dwellers and mole people alike."
"Smack (Again)" definitely presents an array of odd noises, conveying springy "boings" and tinny "plinks" atop a steady, futuristic-sounding back beat. You can hear the oddball charm of "Smack (Again)" right now in the player below.
Primitives is out on May 18 via Flau, and Hansen will be performing as Stefan Jós at this year's MUTEK festival, which takes place in Montreal from May 27 to 31.
