Status/Non-Status Announce New Album 'Surely Travel,' Share Video for Lead Single "Mashkiki Sunset"

The new record from Adam Sturgeon and co. arrives this September

Status/Non-Status — the creative project of Adam Sturgeon and friends, formerly WHOOP-Szo — have announced Surely Travel, their first album under the new name. Arriving September 23 on You've Changed Records, the record is being previewed with lead single "Mashkiki Sunset," which comes attached to a beautiful stop motion video from Sarah Houle.

Written in both solitary silence and in the company of others, Surely Travel was recorded over 10 days at Sudbury's Deadpan Studios, eschewing some of the lush atmospherics of Sturgeon's previous work for a simple setup of single vocal takes, Wurlitzer, and a $100 classical guitar through an amp.

"Mashkiki is the Anishinaabe word for medicine and this song serves as a dedication to love, one of our 7 sacred teachings," says Sturgeon, describing the record's lead single as "about being trapped in a van, watching life pass by through a foggy windshield. While often pulled far from home, I will picture myself a bird, flying home on a beautiful sunset atop the back of my dear old van."

Surely Travel is the full-length follow-up to 2019's Polaris Music Prize Long Listed Warrior Down. Status/Non-Staus released the 1,2,3,4,500 Years EP the following year, and in 2021, Sturgeon teamed up with Zoon's Daniel Monkman to form OMBIIGIZI. Their debut album Sewn Back Together is shortlisted for the 2022 Polaris Prize
