Stars of the Lid Offshoot A Winged Victory for the Sullen Score Dance Piece for New Kranky Release

BY Alex HudsonPublished Mar 7, 2014

The slow-moving ambient soundscapes of A Winged Victory for the Sullen may not exactly be considered "dancefloor-appropriate," but that isn't stopping the duo — which features Adam Wiltzie of Stars of the Lid — from scoring a dance piece. Their Atomos VII EP is due out on April 28 through Kranky.

This EP is the precursor to an impending full-length, which will be the score for choreographer Wayne McGregor's new long-form dance piece. The collaboration with McGregor began when the choreographer played the duo's Exclaim!-approved self-titled album from 2011 during dance practices. His troupe responded well, prompting him to contact the musicians about scoring his new piece.

Atomos VII features three tracks: the title cut, which comes from the upcoming score; an outtake from the duo's aforementioned self-titled LP; and a remix of "Atomos VII" by Ben Frost, who previously composed music for McGregor.

Below, watch a trailer for the upcoming Atomos from McGregor's Random Dance Company. It includes snippets of the dramatically downtempo score and shots of dancers.

Expect the full Atomos score to arrive later this year.

Atomos VII:

1. Atomos VII
2. Minuet for a Cheap Piano Number One
3. Atomos VII (Greenhouse Re-interpretation) (with Ben Frost)
