Spygirl

Spygirl

I'm kind of mad at Spygirl. With name like that, I thought their CD would be a cool kind of spy flick soundtrack thing with a heavy '60s element to it, but no such luck. Guilty of false advertising by their name, says I. Billing themselves as "urban folk trip funk country hop jazz pop" makes sure that they cover just about every possible musical base without being too offensive to anyone. Very melodious, very ocean breezy, pretty trippy, with horns that fade in and out, dream-like, it's a good sound for describing Vancouver, capturing the city's spirit like a puff of smoke in a green bottle. While not questioning their abilities as musicians, which, to be sure, are impressive, there does seem to be a soft interior to their music that their individual parts try to disguise.
