Spirit Josh Turn Grief into Adventure in "Pinetree Lake" Video

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jan 10, 2020

Toronto indie folk act Spirit Josh released their self-titled debut album last spring, and they are keeping the momentum rolling with a video for LP cut "Pinetree Lake."

The album itself is a tribute to band member Matt Jonn Lewis's younger brother Josh, who passed away in 2017. "Pinetree Lake" specifically references a favourite spot that Matt and Josh once visited.

"Dad, Josh and I went camping on Pinetree Lake, years back," Lewis tells Exclaim! "In the summertime some friends and I went back, but I didn't see Josh anywhere, and for some odd reason I was expecting him to be there."

The video captures that lack of physical presence, but embraces the feeling of Josh being there in spirit. It follows Lewis and his bandmates traipsing through the outdoors, exploring nature alongside the ghost of Josh.

The group will perform as part of Exclaim!'s Class of 2020 show at the Monarch Tavern in Toronto on January 18.

First, though, take a look at their new video for "Pinetree Lake" below.
