Spells of Vertigo

"Beginning of Life"

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jun 8, 2016

Last year, Toronto rockers Spells of Vertigo delivered their Soaked EP, spawning the single and video "Baby Born (With No Brain)." They're ready to follow that up with a brand new EP that's either optimistically or ominously entitled The Internet Is Forever, but before the new record arrives in its entirety, Exclaim! is giving you a glimpse into what's to come with the premiere of "Beginning of Life."

The track finds the band drifting away from the arena rock acts that influenced their earlier work, opting instead to draw inspiration from the likes of Pat Metheny and Brian Eno.

"After Soaked was released and we started playing shows we thought we may have been giving people the impression we were some kind of revivalist group, which is the opposite of why the band was started," bandleader Keegan Powell tells Exclaim! "You never forget the bands that influenced you as a teenager, but a certain point you start to say goodbye to them in the back of your mind and let bigger concepts take over your thinking."

That mind-opening approach to making music has resulted in a jangly new instrumental number that opens with crisp, shimmering guitar lines that gradually swirl into layers of reverb and other psychedelic sounds.

Check out Spells of Vertigo's upcoming live shows listed below, and hit play beyond that for your first listen to "Beginning of Life."
