Speaking Canaries

Get Out Alive: The Last Type Story

BY Jon BartlettPublished Dec 1, 2003

Don Caballero drummer Damon Che shows that he is no one-instrument man with another edition of impressive guitar callisthenics on the latest from Pittsburgh’s the Speaking Canaries. Get Out Alive’s juxtaposition of abrasive guitars and soft cooed vocals works well, certainly far better than the legions of bands doing similar things. Dynamics are the biggest selling point here, and the Speaking Canaries aren’t afraid of mixing it up a little. There are relatively straightforward structures holding the songs together, but with the décor of guitar harmonics, time signature juggling, anthemic progressions and great drumming, Get Out Alive rises above.
