Spank Rock

Everything is Boring and Everyone is a Fucking Liar

Spank Rock's 2006 album, YoYoYoYoYo, was the harbinger of party rap. Back then, MC Spank Rock and producer XXXChange's filthy, bassed-out music was trendsetting, but what now that the shtick's been stolen by everyone from Will.I.Am to Ke$ha? Everything is Boring and Everyone is a Fucking Liar is an ambitious album title, establishing a premise that it will somehow move beyond. To be sure, there's enough knob-tweaking savvy to add nuance throughout the 14-track record, courtesy of producers like XXXChange, Mark Ronson, Boyz Noize and Diplo. But songs such as "Nasty," featuring New Orleans sissy bounce queen Big Freedia, "The Dance" and "Birfday" tease with the temporal trendiness of electro, underscoring the fact that early adopters have moved on and just how much other artists have profited from the template. There are a couple of good moments though. "#1 Hit" is a fun blend of styles: earnest indie rock vocals, dancehall snares and pervy rapping. And one very exciting thing about Everything is Boring is the appearance of Santigold, rumoured to have an album out soon, on the twerky, guitar-driven "Car Song."
