SoundAsleep Midget Porn & Clockwork Surgery
A melting pot of weirdness, Montreal's SoundAsleep may believe themselves inspired by the bass-heavy meandering of Primus and Mr. Bungle's odd structures but as debut effort Midget Porn & Clockwork Surgery unfolds, there are far more Voivod and NoMeansNo influences than anyone could possibly ignore. Sure, these guys subtlety inject the aforementioned artists' wonky guitar passages and pre-nu metal heavy grooves into their work but from a vocalist that can't deny his Quebecois accent - and it kind of enhances the experience, to be honest - to a tempered aggression that only Mr. Wrong has been able to exude while smashing his four-stringer, this band would be better of to admit their oddball Canadian influences, as opposed to letting the obvious ones overtake them. Catchy, unusual and aggressive without being unlistenable noise, saccharine or overbearing, Midget Porn & Clockwork Surgery rides a great line between prodigious geekiness and thick metal.
