Sony BMG Music Entertainment is partnering with Amazon’s MP3 provider and will be selling their music through this unprotected format on Amazon’s digital download store. This news comes after Sony BMG’s selling of album-specific digital download gift cards redeemable in MP3 format.

The gift card initiative only offered 37 albums, while the Amazon agreement shows an acceptance of the MP3 format by Sony BMG. Before this movement, Sony BMG was hesitant to the idea of abandoning music protected by digital rights management software.

"We are excited to be working with Amazon, as they continue to build new markets for digital music,” said Sony BMG Music Entertainment Global Digital Business & U.S. Sales President Thomas Hesse. "We are constantly exploring new ways of making our music available to consumers in the physical space, over the Internet and through mobile phones, and this initiative is the newest element of our ongoing campaign to bring our music to fans wherever they happen to be.”

An exact date has yet to be finalised for when Sony BMG’s music will be available through Amazon, but a press release states that it will potentially be as soon as later this month.
